Sell Your Knowledge
I grew up in the southern part of Denmark close to the German border. For me it was common knowledge that everything related to Hardware such as digital cameras, video camcorders, speakers, amplifiers and CD and DVD players etc. were much cheaper in Germany. We were talking about 20-50% cheaper compared to regular prices in Denmark.
One day around year 2000 an old friend of mine approached me and asked me to listen to his new brilliant business idea. The idea was basically that he would create an online store where users could search for products and see the price they would be able to get it for. But the trick was that in order to get the product the user had to buy a printed document that was sent by mail that contained a description on how to get the product for that price.
The document basically just contained a complete description on how to order the product on a German website. But it was so detailed that even a person with no knowledge about German would be able to follow the instructions on how to order it.
His business model was that he would charge 40 USD for the document, but since most of the products were costing several hundred dollars it would always be a good deal for the buyer.
He asked me for my opinion and I told him that I did not believe in it. There were several points that influenced my opinion. First my German is close to perfect and I would have no problems ordering stuff on a German website. Secondly I always do very good research about the stuff that I buy and I do not think about physical borders.
So my friend ended up executing his idea and quickly got featured on a popular TV-program that made his sales sky rocket. He made a minor fortune and became a millionaire – at least in Danish currency.
Instead of mailing the documents to the customers my friend could have used the AtBizz platform in combination with his own website to sell his knowledge.
But what does this story really tell? You should not assume that what you know has no value to others. You should not assume the knowledge you have and take for granted is not something others would pay for.
